  Chapter 1

Ethan pushed his hair around with the comb. No matter what he did with it he couldn't manage to look like a grown up. The long stuff on the top refused to comb neatly to either side, insisting on flopping forward playfully.

His hair had never bothered him before. In fact, he couldn't remember the last time he tried to coax the stubborn cowlick into obedience.

He put down the comb and shook his head till the curl went back to its usual state.

He was so nervous. This was the kind of crap girls did, worrying about getting their hair just right. Like anyone cared about that stuff.

Ethan ran his fingers through his hair and sighed at his reflection in the mirror. It must not matter. He was pretty sure she already liked him. They'd hardly spent more than a few hours apart from each other since the first time they met.

He gave himself one last look in the mirror.

All he saw was an awkward kid with floppy hair standing in front of him. A little too tall to disappear in a crowd, the lanky young man he was just beginning to grow out of still visible under the dark red button down shirt.

The Ethan in the mirror rocked slightly from heel to toe in his polished boots, making him appear nervous.

"You think you're nervous?" Ethan chided his reflection, "you don't have to go sit through a fancy dinner with the girl of your dreams and try to figure out how to tell her you're a bear."

The Ethan in the mirror knitted his brow together over his eyes, a deep vertical crease furrowing under the floppy curls that had now been given up on.

"Sorry man," Ethan mumbled apologetically to the other Ethan, "didn't mean to worry you."

Ethan turned away from the mirror and headed for the front room. He walked through the kitchen, absentmindedly searching the refrigerator before realizing he was about to meet Mindy for dinner. He frowned at his hand for refusing to put the left over casserole back on the shelf, then shrugged and gave in.

The bear was hungry. The bear was always hungry. He laughed a little as he realized that he never seemed to get the upper hand over the animal, then reached into the drawer for a fork and settled against the kitchen counter while he dug in.

Just a few bites to tide him over, he promised himself. Three minutes later, Ethan stared at the empty plastic ware container his mother had sent home with him last week. He briefly considered licking it before tossing it in the sink with the fork. He knew Mom would want her container back, even though it was just one of those cheap plastic things that sandwich meat came in these days.

The time on the microwave caught his eye, only 6:12. Mindy wasn't even off work yet. Reservations were for 8.

Dammit. Way too early. He just couldn't get the hang of making plans. He thought about heading down to the water. He could go for a walk along the beach. No. That's the sort of thing he should do with Mindy. He could wait for her at the bar.

The idea of putting away a couple pints of the latest batch of IPA appealed to him. It would knock the edge off at least but then he wanted to make sure he was sharp for the talk with Mindy.

Ethan paced a few small circles in the middle of his living room before sinking onto the edge of the armchair and letting his head fall into his hands.

"Breathe," he reminded himself, "Just keep breathing."

He wondered if his brother, Lucas, had been this nervous when he found his mate?

He'd been a lot younger when Luke and Aimee got together. Still in high school, barely 17. He hadn't been paying much attention back then, more worried about keeping his old Blazer running, or finding gas money for it than about his older brother's love life.

Ethan finally heaved a deep sigh and leaned into the back of the chair, his head tilted toward the ceiling, letting his eyes close while he ran through the last few weeks in instant replay.

He met her back in March. One of those days where the sun poured over the ocean all day and the otters filled the harbor. Tourists flocked to the pier to watch the little weasels all holding hands and grooming their babies on their stomachs.

  Tourists loved otters.

Ethan couldn't blame the people, the otters were cute. He wished he'd never written that paper on them when he was in the 5th grade, they got a lot less cute when you knew more about them.

There had been a big raft of maybe 40 or more of new otter moms in the harbor that day, up close to the water's edge where the people could get a good look at them.

She'd been taking pictures with one of those giant lenses like the paparazzi used to get phot
os of celebrities sunbathing naked in their backyards from three states away. She was on the dock, clear on the other side of the otters, laying on her stomach with her elbows propping her up while she zoomed in.

"That's a pretty big lens for a girl like you." He thought he sounded so clever.

The girl that was stretched out at his feet twisted her torso and looked up at him, giving him a sour expression that suggested he required a lot more originality in his pick up lines.

"I like em big," she said dryly, her eyes moving up Ethan's body with quiet consideration before turning her attention back to the otters.

Ethan wasn't sure how to read her. She hadn't told him to fuck off but she hadn't exactly rolled over and dropped her pants either.

The girl in question was about his age, early to mid-20's, stretched out on her belly on the wooden pier with her huge camera lens whirring and spinning as she snapped pictures of the otters. Her hair was black, snaking down her back in one long shiny onyx braid that sparkled in the overhead sunlight. She was wearing a hoody, some garish bright pink thing that looked like one of the local tourist sweatshirts.

His eyes appreciated the obvious curves under the bulky sweatshirt. He could see where her waist cinched in under her rib cage, a pale crescent of bare skin peeking out between the hem of the shirt and the waistband of her skin tight stretchy jeans.

That's as far as he got before his dick caught up with the view. Shit. He shifted his weight nervously as he stood over her and continued admiring the view.

He was only 25. It was still easy to get his imagination all worked up at the mere sight of a hot girl, but he couldn't remember the last time he'd gotten a hard-on just standing out here on the pier staring at some girl's ass.

Then again, he couldn't remember the last time he'd seen a ass like this one.

The stretch denim looked like it had been painted on, pouring over the sweetest inverted heart shape he'd ever seen. Wide and full, rounded along her hips, the fabric hugging along each contour, cupping her cheeks firmly but lovingly before being stretched over the roundness of her thighs. The jeans were tight at the joints of her knees and then flowed out again over perfectly formed calves that tapered nicely to her ankles.

Not kankles, but thick. Still feminine though. Her ankles looked strong, like she'd be able to keep up with him on a hike or a run along the beach, but still look dainty in high heels.

What the fuck was wrong with him? Was he seriously staring at her ankles when her ass was right there on display like that? Ethan squirmed against the growing tightness behind the zipper of his jeans again and let his eyes go back to her luscious bottom.

She wiggled back from the edge of the pier and made an adjustment on her camera. When she did, her ass jiggled a little, moving in a way not entirely unlike he imagined it would if he was rutting into her from behind.

The image burned into his brain so vividly he momentarily lost track of where he was. A deep rumbled rolled through his chest. One of those noises that his bear made when it saw something it really wanted. It came out louder than usual, catching Ethan slightly off guard.

"Well are you going to help me up, or are you intimidated by the size of my lens?"

The girl at his feet was looking up at him with big blue eyes. That pale turquoise color that was so clear it was almost creepy to look at and yet so mesmerizing that he couldn't look away. She held her hand up and he pulled her easily to her feet.

The pink sweat shirt was right in front of him, the generic California Beach Town logo on her chest swelling toward him over her generous breasts.

  "I'm up here."

Her voice sounded less annoyed by his lack of eye contact than her words suggested. Ethan jumped, embarrassed by his obvious staring.

"Sorry," he blushed as he pulled his eyes off her tits and forced himself to lock onto those dangerously blue eyes of hers, "I, uh, don't usually..." His voice trailed off, replaced by an apologetic shrug and a pretty lame smirk.

"Ethan," he introduced himself, holding his hand back to her.

She looked at his hand like it made no sense to her, "Mindy," she said like it was an afterthought as she turned around and picked up the camera bag from the pier.

"You local?" Mindy asked as she began walking back toward the street.

"Born and raised," Ethan said proudly as he hurried to catch to her, "I've never seen you here before."

It sounded stupid and he knew it but he had no idea what else to say to her. He figured he'd better put in some effort to get to know her before he threw her over his shoulder and took her home to fuck her.

Damn, there went his imagination again. He watched the way her ass moved as she walked, the lower edge of each cheek tilting up at the hip with each stride, begging him to reach out and take a handful.

He really liked following her, but he wished he'd had more time to look at her front.

"Hey," Mindy stopped abruptly when she reached the sidewalk and spun around on the heel of her little canvas sneakers, "Ethan, right?"

Those eyes were watching him as he finished walking toward her, he saw her lashes flutter slightly as her gaze traveled down his body and back up before a sly smile curled one corner of her lips into a look that said she liked what she saw.

Ethan nodded that she'd gotten his name right.

"So," her tongue poked out between her lips and slid over the upper one, wetting it enough that for a second it glistened in the sun, "I showed you my lens..." her eyes landed on his crotch and one eyebrow arched suggestively before she raised her eyes back to his, letting her intent hang obviously in the air between them, "you wanna show me yours?"

Ethan was caught off guard. He stood in front of her for a second, totally unaware that his jaw was hanging open until the musical sound of her laughter rang through his stupor.

"Oh my gosh!" Mindy was laughing, "I'm sorry! Did I scare you off?"

Ethan felt a familiar rumble deep in his chest. The bear was at full attention now, as if it had just woken up. He pulled conscious thought above the sound of blood rushing through his veins. He pushed the bear to the back.

The distinct scent of arousal wafted toward him on the late afternoon breeze, sweet and musky and promising a much better way to spend the day than he'd originally planned.

"No." His voice had gone dusky as he took moved toward her.

That had been the beginning. He had grabbed Mindy's hand and dragged her six blocks up hill to the tiny one bedroom bungalow that he called home. He managed to get her through the front door and set her camera bag on the floor before pulling that ridiculous tourist sweatshirt over her head.

His hands had been aching to pull her hair from its neat braid. He wanted to know what those silky black tresses felt like between his fingers. He wanted to see them spilling forward, framing her face and contrasting with those clear blue eyes.

As soon as the hoodie hit the floor, however, her hair was forgotten. She stood in front of him in a thin cotton t-shirt. Plain white stretched across her generous breasts, the lace of her bra clearly visible through the fabric. The cups of the bra cut low across her flesh and the mounds seemed to spill out over the top.

His hands were pulling the t-shirt over her head and tugging at the hooks at the back of her bra before he remembered how hungry he was for a taste of her pouty mouth.

Her bra swung forward, slipping down her shoulders to reveal broad, coral-colored areolas puckered around her hardened nipples.

Ethan's mouth was on its way to her lips but the sight of those taut buds pulled his attention lower till his mouth locked onto one of them. His tongue swirled while he pulled gently with his teeth.

Mindy's back arched, pushing her breast into his mouth. His hands braced against her back, pinning her against his hungry mouth.

He was down on his knees, pulling her down with him till he had her laid out on the living room rug his mouth still working at each nipple while his hands fumbled to peel those skin tight jeans off her.

Finally, he had her naked underneath him. Sunlight poured through the big bay window that looked out over the houses farther down the hill out to the ocean. Anyone that walked up the steps to the front door would be able to see them on display.

He grabbed her legs and pushed her knees up to her chest, spreading her thighs and burying his face in the source of her scent.

Mindy moaned somewhere above him. He could feel her head turn against the soft rag rug that covered the hard wood floor. Her hands moved at her sides, grasping at the rug before finding their way into his hair.

He pushed her knees farther up, tilting her pelvis up so that her delicious pussy was on full display to him. He dragged his tongue along her folds and smiled at the noises she made. He flicked his tongue over her swollen clit, holding her still as she writhed between his face and his floor, gasping for breath.

Slipping a finger inside her made her moan again, a sweet, low sound that broke into a series of frantic gasps as he slipped a second finger deep into her channel and felt her pussy clenching tightly against him as she rode his face.

She tasted so sweet and the mewling sounds she made as he lapped at her clit had him ready to come in his pants. If she hadn't finally pushed him from her body, he'd have kept it up till he passed out from lack of oxygen to his brain.

Making her come was his new favorite thing to do.

"Ethan" his name was a breathy rasp on her lips as he reluctantly removed his tongue from the magic spot that made her squirm in his grip, "Ethan," her voice was a little stronger now. She pulled herself up so that she had the advantage, pushing him over backwards while she pulled his t-shirt over his head and dragged her fingertips down his chest.
